Matching cross tattoos on two ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two small crosses sit on the outer ankles of two people's feet, each with a bold outline and dark, solid fill that shades toward grey at the edges. The crosses have decorative flared ends and are set at a similar size and angle, so they read as a matching pair. The warm wooden floor and denim trouser cuffs at the top of the frame keep the background neutral, and the ink is the only strong colour in the shot.

Dear Tilly,

You will have heard by now that Mr Pryce did not come to the reunion, and that Jo Kendal spent the whole evening telling anyone who would listen that she was the one who set fire to the chemistry lab. She was not. I have decided it does not matter. What matters is the afternoon behind the bike sheds when you drew two crosses on the back of my hand in biro and said nobody else would ever own the same mark.

I went to see Mr Oduya on Queen's Road last Thursday. He asked whether I wanted them the same size as yours, and I told him yours were never straight anyway, so he could make mine as wrong as he liked. He laughed, drew them small and flared at the ends like the ones on the old lych gate, and went over the outlines twice. The black sat hard for a while and then softened at the edges into grey, which he said would hold for decades.

At the reunion, when the DJ played that Blur song you used to hate, you knew every word and I knew none, and we ended up on the fire exit step with the cold coming up through the stone. Neither of us said why we had come back. We just compared our little crosses in the light from the car park, the way we used to compare our handwriting in the back of Latin.

Write back soon. Tell me whether yours still aches when the damp comes in off the river.

Love, Hannah
