Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three pairs of feet and ankles are shown side by side, with a small black anchor tattoo on the ankle of each. The anchors use thin, clean outlines with no visible shading. The skin tones are natural, the ink is black and the composition is close and casual, with coral trousers, denim shorts and dark flip flops in view.

Shift your feet off that step, love, and I'll tell you about the grey chairs behind the bakery on Ferry Lane. Her husband Tobias had gone out past the breakwater one February night, and the sea gave back only his boat's anchor, hauled up on a rope cut clean. She had it bolted to the shop wall where the customers could see it. Three girls from the flats above would come down after dark, flip flops slapping the pavement, and sit on those chairs with penny sweets while she spun them tales about sailors who never came home and ships that did.

One July the youngest, a girl with a hiccup of a laugh, asked why an anchor was any use if it never touched the bottom. Mrs Okonedo took a biro from her apron and said an anchor was only a way of saying stay. She drew a small one on each girl's ankle, slow and careful, while the gulls argued over the bins.

The girls left for Newcastle that autumn, and the chairs stayed warm for a week after, though nobody had sat in them. Every spring, she said, the post brought a card with three small anchors drawn on the front, and she pinned it above the shop wall beside the rope that had come home without its man.
