Playing card suit tattoos on ankles and wrist

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Several people's feet and one wrist are shown in a bathroom with tiled floor. Two ankles carry black linework tattoos of a club and a spade, and a heart outline is visible on a third ankle. A small red diamond sits on the inner wrist of another person, and the subject matter matches the suit symbols.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Kestrel House played cards after the lift broke, so when Nadia came up the stairwell with a fresh pack in her coat, we all pretended we hadn't been waiting. The pack was the blue-backed kind from the corner shop, soft as tissue. She shuffled on the balcony with the wind pushing the cards out of her hands, and she laughed when Shona grabbed for the queen of hearts.

We played for buttons and then for pride. Shona had the sharp eyes and the quiet mouth, always dealing from the bottom of the pile. I had the luck, or so they said, which mostly meant I didn't mind losing. The club came out of the pack first, three black lobes like a burnt cross, and Nadia said that one was for hard work. The spade was Shona's, pointed at the bottom like a shovel she'd dig herself out with. Nadia wanted the diamond, a small red thing she said looked like a window catching the sun.

Then came the night the power went off across the whole estate and we played by torchlight, our socks tucked under the table against the cold. Nadia lost the last hand and laughed about it, then slid the diamond card across to me and said keep it. I still have it in my purse, creased down the middle, next to a heart I never got round to ordering. Nobody has dealt me a better hand since.
