Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a shaded crown tattoo above a line of cursive script. Both are rendered in black and grey with soft shading and a clean white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The castle at Harrowmere had lost its roof before anyone living could remember, so the two crowns were kept in the chapel crypt, where the rain only reached the corners. Old Mab Tallow swept the dust off them every spring. The first was tall, with a lily standing up from its middle like a sentry. The second had a ring of round orbs along its rim, nine of them, each the size of a plum stone, and a band at its foot the grey of wet slate.

Nobody had worn them for three hundred years. The king who commissioned them had two daughters who fought over which of them was the elder, and the fighting had reached the stables and the kitchen and the bells. So he sent for the goldsmith and asked for two crowns that could never be ranked against each other. One would have the lily, one the orbs, and neither would be bigger. Then he told the girls they must wear them on the left wrist, under the sleeve, where only the household would know which was which.

Tom, Mab's grandson, asked her why they were not worn on the head like proper crowns. She said the king wanted his daughters to feel the promise every time they reached for bread or pulled a rope or took hold of each other in a doorway. Tom said that sounded like a poor sort of crown. Mab agreed, and then she showed him the thin line of ink that ran from the lily-girl's name down toward the orbs.

In the morning the crypt door was open a crack. Someone had left a single plum on the flagstone beside the orb-crown, and the stone was still warm from a hand.
