The brass crown on the cake stand had lost two of its points by the time Marjorie Penhale decided it was hers to keep. Her husband Dennis had won it at the Whitby regatta in 1974 by hooking a tin mermaid off the pier, and ever since it had sat on the mantelpiece of the boarding house like a judge waiting for a verdict.

Dennis had called her Queen the first summer, when she ran the kitchen and he ran the boats, and she had called him King back, half to tease him. Neither of them thought about it again until the autumn the boarding house flooded and the bank wanted the deeds. They sold the crown to a scrap man from Scarborough for eleven pounds. He paid in coins that smelled of the harbour.

Years later, in a parlour above a chip shop on Skinner Street, the two of them sat with their sleeves rolled and a needle buzzing like a trapped wasp. Marjorie wanted her crown over her heart, where the cardigan buttons went. Dennis wanted his on the back of his wrist, where he could glance at it while steering. The man with the machine drew the words first in pencil, swooping and a little drunk, and they argued over the capital K until it looked right.

Walking home along the front that night, Dennis held his wrist up to the streetlamp and grinned. "Still a king, I see." Marjorie said nothing, which was how she won most arguments, and she let him carry the bag of leftover chips all the way up the hill.
