Matching couple tattoos on fingers and wrists
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A collage of several photographs showing small matching tattoos on fingers and wrists, including hearts, a spade, crowns, numerals and script words such as One Life, One Love, Always and Forever. The lettering is fine and script-like, while the crowns are drawn in black linework with some shaded detail. Most of the ink is black or grey, with a small red heart in one image.

Vera had lettered shopfronts along the Margate front for thirty-one years, and she could tell a customer's mind by the order he gave his words. Most wanted the name first. The man who came in on a wet Tuesday wanted Forever before anything else, then sat on the stool by the gold-leaf tins and asked for it smaller.

"Smaller than what?" she said.
"Than the other one. Always. She'll want Always on top."
She drew it on greaseproof paper with a sable brush and a stick of chalk, the way her father had taught her, in a script with loops that leaned into each other like two people sharing an umbrella. Forever came out tall and narrow. She put a small crown above it with pearls along the rim, because the jeweller's wife had asked for one, and the brass key on the chain round her neck knocked the table each time she leaned in.
Three weeks later the man came back alone with the sketch folded to a square in his coat pocket. He asked whether she could paint over the crown. Vera laid the paper flat and smoothed it with the side of her hand.
"Paint over it with what?" she said.
He didn't answer. She took the gold leaf down from its shelf, cut a clean strip, and laid it on the glass so the light from the sea would catch the letters from the street. Always stayed in its place. The crown she left blank, a bare pale patch that the gulls would later mistake for a window.
