Two crown tattoos on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show a crown tattoo each. The left crown has a bold black outline, a dotted border and solid red fill with light shading. The right crown is shaded in grey with pink gemstones, small beads and a hanging chain beneath the band. Both are centred on a plain, light background with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The commission came on a wet Tuesday, written on the back of a ferry ticket by two girls who could agree on nothing except that they wanted crowns. You read the ticket twice at your bench above the fish market in Harrowgate Lane, then reached for the red enamel, because you had never made two things that matched and saw no reason to start now.

Ilse got the red one first. She wanted it to look as if it had been left out in a storm and come back proud, so you gave it a bold black rim, a border of dots like rivets on a herring boat, and arches filled with enamel the colour of holly berries, shaded dark at the base so it seemed lit from within. Marta, younger and sharper, wanted pink stones and a chain of tiny jet beads that would knock against her band when she walked. You told her it would keep the rain out. She did not believe you, and she was right not to.

On the eve of the midsummer fair, Ilse came back alone with her crown wrapped in a tea towel and asked you to take the red off. Not all of it, she said, only enough that nobody would look at her first. Turning it over, you found the chain had been sewn to the wrong crown. Marta's beads were hanging from Ilse's arches, and neither sister had noticed except Ilse. You unpicked the thread, moved the chain across, and said nothing about who had been wearing what.

At dawn the two crowns sat side by side on the bench, grey and red, the beads swinging from the red one and catching the first light off the harbour. Ilse lifted hers, watched the little links sway, and laughed for the first time that week. Marta took hers without a word and put it on crooked. You left them in the window on one velvet cloth and went to make the tea.
