Rose and lily tattoos on two arms
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two tattoos sit on separate arms, each combining a dark swirling ornament with a flower. The left design has solid black shading with a teal rose, and the right has pink-red linework with a pink lily outlined in blue. The photograph is taken close up at an angle, with the tattoos filling the centre of the frame.

You are the third mate on the Marguerite Lane, sixteen days out from Falmouth, when the bosun hands you the bracket that snapped loose in the Bay of Biscay. The sea has gone the colour of wet slate and nobody wants to climb the rigging to look at it. You carry the iron below to the lamp room, where Nell Garrity is scraping salt off the brass with a thumbnail and a spite she never bothers to hide.

"Two halves," she says, turning it over in the lamplight. "Somebody cast this as a pair." You find the other half wedged behind a crate of tinned peaches in the forward hold, the same black curl, the same heavy knob at the top, and between the curls the faint ghost of a rose that some foundryman in Penryn once pressed into the sand. Nell wants to weld them back together and be done. You want to leave them apart, because the ship's owner, old Mrs Penhallow, once told you the pair had been split on purpose, one for each daughter who sailed away.
The lamp gutters while you argue. Nell admits she has seen the lily on the other half, pink as a ribbon on a christening gown, and she admits the rose would have looked lonely without it. You fit the halves together on the workbench and the curls lock with a sound like a latch. For a moment the whole thing reads as one ornament, a flourish that could have hung over any door in the county.
In the morning you bolt the pieces to opposite rails, one facing the bow and home, one facing the wake and everything already behind you. When the wind takes the ship, both halves turn in the same direction, and you realise the crew has started calling the stern rail the lily side, and the bow the rose.
