Matching elephant tattoos on two women
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two women are photographed from behind, each with an elephant tattoo with its trunk raised. The elephants have detailed patterned blankets and a small symbol on the body, with a fine script mark above each trunk. The work is in black and grey with fine linework and shading, set against plain, softly lit skin and dark clothing.

The monsoon had skipped the Kesari valley for three seasons, and the two young elephants had learned that a raised trunk could carry further than any call. Anja and Maro were nearly grown, too old to be led about on a rope and too young to be trusted with the old well under the fig trees. When the keepers were busy with the festival, they slipped their tethers and walked out together, shoulder to shoulder, with the dust rising pale behind them.

The festival blankets were the trouble. The village women had stitched a sun into the centre of each one and a row of small stars along the hem, and the cloth dragged at every step like a wet sail. Maro wanted to shrug his off in the scrub. Anja said they had promised, and besides, the sun was the thing a lost child would look for when the heat came up off the stones, so they would keep them on.
At the well they found a boy, thin as a reed, lowering a clay jar on a fraying cord into a mouth of dry stone. Anja curled her trunk down, hooked the jar gently by its neck and set it on the lip of the stones. Maro stood in the shade of the fig and lifted his trunk toward the hills, sounding the long low note that told the herd where water was. Within the hour the grey line of them came over the ridge, and the boy sat in the shadow of the two painted blankets, drinking slowly, while the sun and the stars caught the last of the light.
