Matching cartoon tattoos on two shoulders

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind, with a fist bump between them in a bright room. Each shoulder carries an identical small tattoo of a round cartoon character with a small circle above its head. The linework is thin and dark grey-black, with minimal shading and no added colour, and the tattoos sit low on the shoulder blade area, centred in each frame.

The lorry had been waved through the lane at half past six, so when the brothers came to my booth at Holyhead with a shoebox held between them like a cake, I had the stamp in my hand and no real reason to look inside. Rhys did the talking. Owen only nodded, and kept nodding, as if he had agreed to something years ago and was still keeping to it.

Inside the box were forty-odd sheets of blue paper, each one a figure drawn in biro: a round soft body, small stubby limbs, and a little ring floating above its head like a bead on a thread. The same shape again and again, getting steadier with each sheet. Rhys said their dad had drawn it on the backs of hospital appointment letters during a long winter in Dublin, and the boys had copied it at the kitchen table until they could do it with their eyes shut.

I asked what they wanted me to declare. Owen finally spoke. He said there was nothing to declare, only that they were taking the sheets over to Cork to put in the pocket of the old man's coat before the funeral, and he wanted someone official to see it was done properly. I told him paper is paper. I stamped the form, then turned the top sheet over and found the figure on the back too, the ring a little wonky, as if it had been drawn in a hurry by someone with somewhere else to be.

Rhys laughed and said that was the first one, the one none of them ever managed to match. Then they went out into the wind, shoulder to shoulder, and before the door swung shut I saw Owen lift his fist and knock it against his brother's, the way you would to close a deal with a stranger.
