Mairead had been told twice already that the net loft was no place for a child with ink on her hands, so she tucked the pot of blacking under her shawl and kept walking. Down on the slip the boats were coming in low on the tide, and her sister Nell was halfway up the steps to the quay, shouting that the gulls had taken her bread.

Old Tamsin Crabb, who mended the nets and everything else, used a tin of ink to mark the cork floats, and she had never once let a child near it. Mairead had watched her draw a cat standing on its back legs, a round head, and a ribbon tied tight at the top like a bow on a parcel. Tamsin said the cat had come over the water in a fishing box in her grandmother's day, and that anyone who wore its likeness would always find the harbour wall in the dark.

Mairead found Tamsin asleep in her chair with her pipe gone cold. She took the pen from the drawer, pressed Nell's wrist flat on the bench, and drew the cat on the soft inside of her arm, thin and neat, bow and all. Nell laughed until she hiccupped, then insisted on the other arm. They inked each other by lamplight until the pot ran dry.

When the squall came down from the north faster than anyone had expected, their father was still out past the breakwater. The girls ran to the wall with the lantern and held their arms up to the wind. Through the spray he saw two small black cats shining in the glow, and he steered by them until the keel grated on the slip.
