Matching hand tattoos on two upper arms

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, with matching outline tattoos of an open hand with long pointed nails and small star shapes above the knuckles. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with no shading. The skin tone is light and the background is plain white, and a separate row of Roman numerals reading MMXV sits below the right-hand tattoo.

Mind the third stair, it gives under you like a wet biscuit, and mind your tongue around Mrs Pascoe, because she sat up with the lamp the night the Ferris boy didn't come back over the harbour wall. Now. Where was I? Ah, yes. The two girls from Bristol.

They took the back room over the kitchen, the one with the damp shaped like Wales, and paid a fortnight up front in coins they had rubbed bright with salt. The taller one, Dilys, held her fingers the way a palm reader does, long and spread, the nails filed to points and painted the colour of a plum gone off. Her friend Nell called her Dilys and never once used the name she was christened with, which is how you know a friendship has got past names altogether.

Every evening they sat at the scrubbed table with a tin of silver paper and cut out little stars, pinning them above the knuckles of their own hands while the kettle ticked. Dilys said the stars were for counting, one for each year they meant to keep the same flat, the same spoons and the same grudge against the tide. Nell said the year on the wall calendar was the only one that counted, and she took a pen and wrote MMXV in capitals on the skirting, because she said numbers that old should be cut, not written.

In February the sea came over the lower road and filled the cellar to the second step. Nell went down with a lamp and didn't come up, and Dilys stood at the top with her hand flat on the glass of the back door, nails catching the light, the silver stars still pinned to her knuckles. I saw it from the landing. She wasn't waving. She was keeping the door shut against the water, and that is the only way I know to tell you what loyalty looks like.
