Two matching fine line infinity symbol tattoos reading family, each with a small red heart, on the inner wrists.

Matching family infinity tattoos on wrists

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with an infinity symbol that contains the word family in cursive script. A small red heart sits on the upper loop of each design, and the two tattoos mirror each other. The black linework is clean and thin, and the plain, softly lit background keeps the focus on the tattoos.

The hatch on Deck Nine had been welded shut for longer than anyone aboard the Halcyon Marrow could remember, so when Ruth Okonedo finally cut through the seam she expected rust and stale air. What she found instead was a pair of enamel plates set face to face across a narrow corridor, each one etched with the same sign: a figure eight lying on its side, the word family running through its middle in slanted script, and a small red heart perched on the upper loop. The plate on her side was the mirror of the one opposite, as if someone had wanted the two halves to read as one picture from either end.

Her grandmother had talked about a sister ship, the Halcyon Tern, that drifted on the far side of the Sorrow Belt. The two crews had been split by a quarantine order in the year the relay failed, and nobody had been allowed to cross. Ruth ran a finger along the enamel and found a seam of solder beneath the heart, fresh enough that it could not have been there for a century. Someone had been maintaining this door, and recently.

She keyed the old relay with her grandmother's access code and waited through forty seconds of hiss. When a woman's voice came back, thin and amused, Ruth asked her to describe the marking on the far wall. The reply came slowly, then all at once: the same figure eight, the same heart, placed on the upper loop of the mirror so that when the two plates were held together the hearts touched at the crossing point.

Ruth laid her wrist against the cold enamel, the way her grandmother had shown her as a girl, and watched the red heart on the far plate slide into line with the one on hers.
