Matching feather and birds tattoos on backs
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two women stand side by side with their backs to the camera, wearing black strapless tops. Each has a feather tattoo on the upper back near the shoulder blade, with a scatter of small birds rising from the quill towards the shoulder. The linework is fine and dark grey, with light shading along the feather, and the two tattoos mirror each other in composition.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Stockport on Tuesday, and Mr Harrow sold the last of the ponies to a farm outside Macclesfield. We have four wagons left and a tent patched with so many squares of sailcloth that it looks like a quilt. Hetty still scatters grain for the doves across the empty lot each morning, as if the crowds might come back for her.

The finch act is what I really wanted to tell you about. Last night, with the lamps half turned down, Ivo opened the wicker basket for the last time, and the birds did not go to their perches. They went up together in one loose rope, past the rigging and over the bare benches, then wheeled twice above the ring before settling on the cold rail. Ivo said they had never once done that in four seasons. He sat on an upturned crate and wept into his waistcoat, and none of us had the heart to tell him the birds were only tired.
Afterwards he gave me a feather from the basket, grey and barred, the quill still warm from somebody's hand. I took it to a shop in Crewe where a man with burnt fingers inked it onto my shoulder blade, with a scatter of small birds lifting off the quill towards my collarbone. He wanted to make a second one, and I paid him from the last of my wages. It is in the post with this letter. When you stand next to me again, the birds will rise the same way from both of us, and the show can close without anybody needing to watch it.
Write back soon, and tell me if the Lisbon ferry still runs in October. Hetty sends her love and a crumb of bread wrapped in brown paper, which you must feed to the first sparrow you see. Yours, Ada.
