Matching paper plane tattoos on upper arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are seen from behind and from the side, each with a small paper plane tattoo on the upper arm near the elbow. The planes are drawn with thin, crisp black outlines and no shading, and they sit against warm, slightly muted skin tones. Each person also wears a necklace with a paper plane pendant, and the plain dark clothing keeps the focus on the tattoos.

The big top had lost two of its poles by the summer the elephants went to a farm in Wales, and the ticket box was kept by Dorrit Vane, who had nothing left to sell but paper. Every evening she folded planes out of the handbills nobody wanted, sharp at the nose, the wings squared off with her thumbnail, and set them on the tent step for whoever was still hanging about.

Her friend Tobiah, the knife thrower, said a plane was only a bit of paper that had given up. Dorrit said it was a bit of paper that had been told where to go. They argued it over the same bottle every night until the rain came sideways off the fens and took the canvas down a metre at a time, and neither of them would let the other have the last word.
On the final night a girl came under the flap with a cardboard suitcase tied shut with string and asked for the cheapest seat in the house. Dorrit had no seats left, so she gave her a plane instead. The girl climbed to the top row and threw it, and it crossed the whole ring past the empty cages and the dead lamps, and came down in the sawdust without a single wobble.
Tobiah walked over and picked it up. The girl had gone by then, and nobody saw which road she took. The plane is still in the ring, they say, folded nose down and pointing at the gap in the canvas, and anyone who finds it has to throw it again before the lamps go out.
