Matching geometric pyramids on two forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms are pressed together, each carrying a tattoo of a tilted geometric pyramid drawn in thin black lines with a dashed inner edge. Pink and blue watercolour-style washes spread around the shapes, with small splatters at the edges. The two designs are near mirror images, sitting in the same position on each arm against a plain light background.

The dashed line was the part Harold always insisted on, the edge you cannot see but must know is there. He said it in the drawing office in Leeds every Monday, tapping the board with his pencil until the new lads stopped yawning. Hidden edge, he'd say. Show the hidden edge or the thing is lying to you.

Priya and Owen arrived in the spring of 1987, both nineteen and both certain they could draw anything. They were rivals before they were friends. She wanted the pyramid standing on its point; he wanted it tipped over like a dropped tent. They argued across two drawing boards until Harold sent them both down to the canal bank with a tin of watercolour and a rule that the job had to be finished before the pub shut.
They came back with ink on their wrists and the same pyramid, leaning at the same angle, one wash pink where the sun had caught it and one blue where the shade had pooled. Harold held the two sheets up to the window for a long time. Then he said the thing I still remember: they had drawn the same shape from opposite banks of the water, and neither of them had been wrong.
They married later that year in a registry office in Otley, Owen still with paint under his nails. What I kept was the sheet. It hangs in my hall now, the pink running into the blue where the two washes met, the dashed line down the middle of both, the edge you cannot see but must know is there.
