Three overlapping triangles on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small tattoo of three outlined triangles, overlapping and stepped diagonally, on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the ink sits neatly against the pale skin. The background is a dark sweatshirt with a numbered sports-style patch and a red and white circular badge, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The third marker had moved again. Hester knelt in the grit beside the iron pin, sighting back along the brass spine of the theodolite toward the two stakes she had driven at dawn, and the numbers would not close. Three points should make a triangle, her tutor used to say, and a triangle was the only shape the desert could not argue with.

She had walked the Carrow Flats road for eleven days with a steel chain, a tripod and a boy named Tobias who counted paces aloud and never once looked up. Each night she drew the survey on squared paper, three outlined triangles stepped down the page like a staircase going nowhere, and each morning the land had shifted a finger's width under her boots. Tobias blamed the heat. Hester suspected the road itself, which had been laid by men who used a different north.

On the twelfth morning she did not drive the pin. She sat with her back against the old milestone, unscrewed the flask, and waited until the sun cleared the ridge and the milestone's shadow lay exactly along the line between the first two stakes. The third point was not in the sand at all. It was wherever the shadow thinned to nothing, a place the chain could never reach.

She wrote the bearing in pencil and closed the notebook. Tobias asked whether the job was finished. Hester said the triangle was complete and that the road would now have to agree with her, which, as the wind dropped flat and the stakes stood where they had been put, it did.
