Ysolde the well-keeper had a daughter named Pell who could not sit still. When the last cistern at Harrow Gap cracked in the dry year, the elders sent Pell down the old shaft with a clay jug and a lamp, because she was small enough to fit through the broken cap. Nobody expected her to come back up with anything but dust.

She found the sea under the hill. It lay in a chamber no wider than a kitchen, pooled black in the rock, and its surface was not still. It turned over itself slowly, teal and then mint and then a green like bottle glass, the colours folding into one another the way cream does in tea. Pell knelt and watched it for so long that her lamp guttered out. When she finally thought to lift the jug, the water rose to meet the mouth of it, and she carried it up the ladder with both hands and did not spill a drop.

The elders argued over the jug for three days. Some wanted it smashed so the sea would stay under the hill where it belonged. Others wanted to drink first. Pell settled it by pouring the water back down the shaft, a little at a time, and the chamber filled to the lip and held. Her mother cut a downward point into the cap stone, so that anyone looking would know which way the water had gone.

Harrow Gap has had wells ever since. When the wind blows across the cap you can hear something turning underneath, slow as a hand stirring soup.
