Tiger and panther heads on thighs

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two snarling big cat heads are tattooed side by side on a pair of legs, with a tiger on the left in orange and black with a blue eye, and a black panther with green eyes on the right. The linework is bold and dark, with shading in black and grey on the panther and warm orange and brown tones on the tiger. The cats are framed by the edges of the photo, with denim and a hand with blue nail polish visible at the top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Jo, the lift in Harrow Point has been out since Tuesday again, so I've been climbing fourteen floors with a bag of potatoes on each hip, and that's how I finally noticed the cats. There are two of them now on the walkway ledge outside number 61, and the lads from the ground floor have named them after the posters in the barber's on Mill Road, Tiger and Panther.

The tiger is ginger and striped with one blue eye that went milky after a row with the Sharma boy's tomcat. The panther is black as a bin bag and furious. For a month they hissed at each other through the railings like two men settling a debt. Mrs Okafor swore they were littermates, which I didn't believe until Sunday, when I saw them sharing a saucer of tinned mackerel, the tiger washing the panther's ear while the panther pretended to be bored by the whole business.

The council men came on Monday to paint the stairwells a pale green, and they left a tin open on the landing. Dennis from 58 said the cats had walked through it and left paw prints all the way down to the bins, and we spent an hour following them like a trail of evidence. Nobody could tell me which of them had started the fight in the first place.

Last night I came home late, and the lift was still dead. On the fourteenth floor, under the window, they were asleep in one heap, orange and black, the blue eye open just a slit and watching the door. I stood there until the landing light clicked off and left us in the dark. I didn't put it back on. Write and tell me what you think they're fighting about now.
