Key and heart padlock on two forearms
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people hold hands, showing a tattoo of a key on one forearm and a heart-shaped padlock on the other. Both designs use black and grey shading with defined outlines, and the key has a more detailed, ornate bow. The close framing places the tattoos centrally, with the arms and hands filling most of the frame.

Tuesday, late October. The snow came over the pass before noon, so I banked the forge early and set to the two pieces Mrs Ansell ordered in August. She wanted a padlock shaped like a heart, its shackle fitted so that only one key in the world would close it. I made the key first, then made it again, because the bow kept coming out lopsided. In the end I cut it like a cathedral window, with scrolls for the ward and a little ivy coiling round the stem.

Her husband, she told me, had gone over the Sallow Pass in March with a letter in one pocket and the old key in the other, and had not come down. She did not say it as a grief. She said it the way you would tell a clerk where to file a bill. I asked whether she wanted the lock sent to him. She said no. She wanted it hung on the gate of the shepherd's hut at the top of the pass, where the road bends, and the key kept by whoever came down first.
So on Thursday I walked it up myself, the lock wrapped in oilcloth inside my coat and the key on a cord round my neck. The hut door had frozen to its frame. Someone had scratched initials into the lintel, and beneath them a small heart with the same crooked curl I had filed into the padlock. I hung the lock on the gate, pressed it shut, and turned the key in my glove until my fingers ached.
Coming down, I passed a man with a dog who asked what I was carrying. I said a lock that had found its key. He laughed and said it was the first sensible thing anyone had told him all winter. I am writing this by the stove. The key is still on its cord, and I have decided it stays with me until someone comes up the pass asking for it.
