Hester and Mab had been born the same week in the house above the salt marsh, and their mother said the sea itself could not tell them apart. When Mab went across the causeway to work at the far farm, they agreed to keep count of the tides between letters. Each would scratch a sign on her wrist with a bent nail, two straight lines crossed by two more, and each time the water turned Hester would add a stroke and so would Mab.

The first winter the marks came back true. Mab's wrist showed the same count as her own, pale and even, and her letters said the farm was cold but the work was honest. In the second winter the letters stopped, and Hester walked the causeway every low tide with her sleeve rolled high, watching the stakes for a figure in a grey coat. Only the gulls followed her out and back.
On the first still morning of March she went out at the bottom of the ebb, when the mud shone like pewter, and found Mab's footprints coming the other way, already halfway across. They had been walking the same causeway from opposite ends, each keeping her count, each too stubborn to wait on the shore.
At the middle stake they stood with their wrists side by side and compared their marks. The counts were the same to the stroke. Hester took the bent nail from her pocket and cut one more line into the wood, and the two of them walked home together as the tide turned, not needing to count anything at all.
