Matching hash symbols on two wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small hash symbols, each made of two vertical and two horizontal lines, are tattooed on the inner wrists of two people with their arms resting together. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the tattoos are roughly the same size and placed at the same height. The warm mustard knit sleeve, gold chain bracelet and dark nails with a gold glitter accent add colour to an otherwise neutral, close-cropped composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm kept the tally for the eastern cloister, and for thirty-one years he had never once been wrong about the number of loaves. So when the new novice, Wynn, came to me in the week after Michaelmas with a smudge of ink on her cheek and asked why the bread count was short by four, I did not answer her at once. I took her down to the bakehouse instead, where the flour bins stood open and the smell of yesterday's sour dough hung in the rafters.

We found the answer at the hatch between the bins and the kitchen, where the cook and the lay brother Ivo had been passing a wooden board back and forth for a fortnight. Each time a loaf went out, one of them scored a mark on it. Two upright strokes, two level ones crossed over them, and beside that a gap where nobody had bothered to count at all. Wynn laughed until she had to sit down on a flour sack. I had not heard laughter in that room for years.

The cook and Ivo stood side by side at the hatch then, looking embarrassed, and I saw that they had cut the same small mark into the wood with the same depth and the same height, so that neither could be blamed for a crooked line. It was the most foolish and careful thing I had seen in a decade of ledgers.

I sent them both to the refectory that night and went back alone with the lamp. The board was full of those marks now, each one answering the one before it, and I could not tell whose hand had cut which. I left it as it was, and in the morning I did not correct the ledger.
