Three people's wrists are held together in the centre of the frame, each showing a small black Roman numeral. Two read III and one reads IIII, set in a clean, thin, uniform typeface. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the photo is taken from above on a textured grey-green surface.

You climb the iron stairs to the clock room above Platform III with the oil can knocking against your hip, because Mr Pargeter has gone home with his chest and the four o'clock has stopped again. The face is a great white disc with black numerals painted by hand. The four is written the old way, IIII, which Pargeter always said was there so the dial would look balanced against the three on the other side.

His ledger lies open on the sill. Beside three entries in his crabbed hand are three numerals: III, III, IIII. You had taken them for platform allocations until you read the note underneath. Keep them together. The works remember who was wound first. You find the pinion, work the grease in with your thumb, and the minute hand jerks forward with a sound like a knuckle cracking.
Below, the platform fills with the late commuters, and you watch a woman in a green coat walk the length of the train with a paper cup, glancing up at the clock every few steps. Two others find her at the bench by the ticket office. They stand close, shoulder to shoulder, and one of them points at the dial and says the big hand is lying. You open your mouth to tell her it isn't, then close it again, because the hands have never once been wrong.
At six the bell rings true. You lock the door, leave the ledger where it lies, and walk out past the buffers into the cold, counting the three of them as they board, and one of them turns at the carriage door and lifts her hand as if she knows exactly who has been keeping her time.
