Matching three-line wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown with palms partly turned up, and each inner wrist carries a small tattoo of three short horizontal black lines. The strokes are thin and crisp, with minimal shading, and the two designs look identical in size and position. The ink is black on skin tone, against a dark sleeve and a grey wooden surface in the background.

Nobody at Thornwick Cut ever agreed on how many boats had come through the bottom gate, so Ida's mother settled it the only way she knew, with a bradawl and three short strokes on the oak beside the sluice handle. One stroke for each of the girls who had worked the paddles that summer, she said, though Ida always suspected it was the number of times she had been sent out in the rain.

Nell came to the cottage the spring their father's barge went down in the Ouse and stayed on as if she had always been there. The two of them learned to open a gate with their shoulders and hips, to read the water rising behind the timber, and to keep quiet while the lock filled, because the noise of it made Mrs Ward cross. Neither of them talked about the barge. They talked about the price of coal and whether the swans would nest again under the footbridge.
When they were nineteen they went different ways, Ida to a clerk's desk in Leeds and Nell to a hospital laundry on the coast. Before the train, they sat on the lock beam with a sewing needle and a bottle of cheap ink from the chandler's, and they pricked the same three lines into the thin skin inside their wrists, because it seemed the only thing either of them could carry without someone taking it off.
Twelve years later the water was low and the gate would not budge. Ida came up the towpath with her sleeves rolled, pressed her wrist against Nell's on the paddle, and felt the old marks line up. The gate groaned, the water rose, and the three bars on the oak looked, for once, like what they had been counting.
