Matching heart and infinity tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists sit side by side, each with a small black outline of a heart intertwined with an infinity loop. The linework is thin and even, with the tattoos placed centrally on each wrist against plain skin. The greyscale photograph is cropped tightly, so the two matching designs are the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The switchboard at Llanwen went dead at ten past four, and Nell Harcourt had to lean across the counter to tell Mrs Pugh that the line to Cardiff was down again. Outside, the rain came sideways off the hill and drummed on the post office roof, and the only sound inside was the tick of the wall clock and the hiss of the dead valve.

Bethan came in from the sorting room with two cups of stewed tea and a telegram form folded in four. On the back, in pencil, she had drawn a heart with a loop of ribbon running through it, the ribbon going round twice like the sign for forever in a child's sum book. "Mam says it looks like a pair of spectacles," she said. "I say it looks like us." They had taken the drawing to the man on Bute Street in June, the one who did anchors for the dock crews, and he had worked the outline in Indian ink with a bent needle while the kettle sang in the back room. It hurt less than waiting on letters from Dai in Korea.

The lamp over the board flickered, the line crackled back to life, and a man from the Ministry asked for Llanwen 14 by name. Nell plugged in the cord, listened, and wrote the message down in careful capitals: ALL WELL. ON THE LIST FOR HOME. Bethan read it over her shoulder and her mouth went flat.

Nell pushed the sheet across the counter. Bethan didn't take it. Instead she laid her wrist against Nell's, the two small hearts side by side, and they sat that way while the rain went on, neither of them reaching for the telephone again.
