Matching heart outline tattoos on wrists
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with an outline heart tattoo. The left wrist has two overlapping hearts in dark ink, and the right has three overlapping hearts in a row, with one red heart and two dark hearts. The linework is smooth and even, with no shading, and the plain background is mostly skin with a dark garment at the right edge.

Nobody on the Leeds stretch believed Ada and Mo Pilling were sisters when they first came through the bottom lock, and I'll not pretend I did either. Two narrowboats, painted the same green, nosed into the queue behind a coal boat and sat there for an hour without a cross word. Ada had the tiller of the first one. Mo had the rope. They took turns the way other folk take turns with a sandwich.

The trouble came in October when the rain filled the top pound and the gates stuck. Three boats were waiting to drop down: the two green ones and a little blue cruiser belonging to a retired surveyor called Mr Harrowgate, who had never once in eleven years kept his temper through a lock. He stood on his roof shouting about paddles. Ada climbed the ladder, wound the windlass, and said nothing at all, which was how she always got things done.
Mo came up the lock steps that evening with a paper bag of windfall apples and a pencil stub. On the back of my lock ledger she drew two hearts, one overlapping the other, then a third hooked onto the end of the row, coloured in with the red crayon from the children's boat. 'Ada says you've been counting boats since spring,' she said. 'Count these.' I wrote her figures in the column the way I always do, then looked at the drawing for longer than the entry deserved.
Ada never came back up the steps. The green boats went down the Aire in the first frost, one behind the other, and the chain stayed on my ledger page where anyone could see it. Some nights I still hear the windlass ticking as the water drops, and I think of those three hearts strung together like boats waiting their turn.
