Dear Nan, the wire came back from Mr Hebden's forge with the curl wrong again, so we sat on the back step and I drew it on the margin of your last letter until it looked right. Kathleen says the scroll should face inwards, toward the heart, like a hand cupping something small. Peggy says outwards, so it can catch the light off the slag heap. We have not settled it, and Mam says we will be grey before we do.

The hooter went at six and the men came up from the coal face grey as slate, and still the four of us crept down to the lane with a bottle of ink from the Co-op and a darning needle held over the range until it blackened. Nobody would let me go first because my hand shakes. Peggy did her own wrist, bit her lip, and said it would be a proper mark now, the kind a person can't wash off with carbolic.

Dad says it is soft nonsense and we will be sorry when we want to hide our arms at the Whitsun dance. Mam said nothing. She only came out with four clean rags and held Kathleen's hand while the needle went in, the way she held yours on the platform the morning you left for Leeds. Kathleen's father has found work in Sheffield now, so she goes on Saturday, and the ink on her wrist is still soft.

So when you come home at Christmas, bring your arm. We'll stand in the lane and line them up, the four of us, and see whether the curls still match or whether we have each bent ours a little toward the people we are holding on to. Write back and tell me which way yours faces.
