Hands with sun and yin yang designs
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Several hands and forearms meet in the centre of the frame, each marked with black ink designs. The motifs include a yin yang symbol on one wrist, sun designs with rays and a spiral sun on the hand, a small cross, dotted lines and a wavy pattern across the fingers. The linework is simple and bold, with no shading or colour, and the arrangement is taken from above.

The fineliner had been Bex's brother's, and it skipped on every stroke, so Nadia kept having to go over the sun twice. They sat on the caravan step at Porthkerris with the bins humming behind them and the last of the light going orange over the car park. Ruth held out the wrist nearest the lamp, the one she always gave up first when they were kids, though nobody had asked her to.

Bex drew the yin yang on her own forearm, a bit lopsided, and said it was for balance, and nobody argued. Nadia did the spiral sun in the middle of Ruth's palm because Ruth wanted something that looked like a clock running backwards. Dots went between the knuckles, rays ran across the fingers, and a small cross went on the heel of Bex's hand for her gran, who would have hated it and who had kept every birthday card they ever sent her.
Tomorrow the ferry would take Ruth across to Plymouth and a job in a hospital kitchen, and the other two would walk back up the hill to the chip shop without her. They stacked their hands in the middle, one on top of the next, and the wet ink printed grey ghosts onto the skin beneath.
The sun came off in the shower three days later, all but a faint ring that Nadia scrubbed at until it hurt. Ruth texted from her new flat that the spiral was still on her palm, a little blurred, and she had been holding a pan of soup over the sink all morning so it could stay in the light.
