Matching small wrist tattoos in a circle
Other · Mixed · Photo
Overhead view of several people's hands and wrists meeting in the centre of the frame. Most tattoos are small black calligraphic characters with bold, even strokes, plus a black dragon on one wrist. A few small, multicoloured cartoon designs, including a strawberry and a caterpillar, sit alongside the black ink.

Mrs Okafor's stall at the Harvest Fair had one rule: the transfers were free, but you had to tell her a true name first. Nobody believed her. Dilys, Priya and the twins from Mill Row had come with a biscuit tin of pennies and a bet that they could make a dragon sit still long enough to be copied onto skin.

The dragon was the hard part. Mrs Okafor drew it in one unbroken stroke while the tea went cold, its tail curled round the character for spring, which she said was the only word that never needed translating. The girls pressed their wrists to the damp sheet and each walked away with a small black mark that smelt faintly of cloves. The twins chose a strawberry and a caterpillar from the sticker sheet by the till, because they had argued all week about which of them was the caterpillar.
Dilys did not wash hers off that night. Through the summer she kept the lines dark while the others let theirs fade to grey, and she stopped answering when they asked why. When the fair came round again the rides were the same, the tin was the same, and Dilys was the only one still standing at the far end of the field, the dragon coiled on her wrist, holding out the tin with one penny left in it.
Mrs Okafor took the penny, looked at the wrist for a long moment, and said the name she had been waiting twelve months to hear.
