Matching triquetra knots on three wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black triquetra knot tattoos, each made of a single looping line with an inner loop at the top, sit on three different wrists. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the three designs are the same size and shape. The hands are clasped in a close, overlapping arrangement against a blurred background of magazines.

The bosun swore the three lengths of tarred line had been coiled and stowed in the forepeak, yet on the fourth Tuesday out of Bristol they lay across the hatch in a snarl no sailor would own to. Mabel Quarrie, who kept the galley fire and the ship's accounts in equal disorder, picked them up and felt a tug at the far end, as if something still wanted to be pulled.

Her sisters had shipped out with her, Nell and Ada, as stewards because the family farm had gone to the bank. On the quay they had sworn that a knot tied by three hands could only be loosed by three, and they had laughed at their own solemnity. Now Nell was sick in her hammock and Ada would not speak of home, and the lines lay in Mabel's palms like a question nobody wanted to answer.
That night she worked them loose by lantern light. Each rope had been tied in the same shape, one loop running round into another with a small eye at the top where the line crossed back on itself, three times over, so the whole thing held its form even when wet. She threaded the first end through the second, then the third, and when the last loop slid home the three ropes lay locked into a single knot no bigger than a wrist.
In the morning the sea was flat and the captain came below to find the stewards asleep at the galley table, their hands resting palm down beside the cold kettle. Nobody aboard the Marrowgate ever learned who had tied the knot. Mabel kept it in her apron pocket until they raised the coast of Canada, and by then none of the three could remember which of them had first put a hand to it.
