Matching hummingbird tattoos on two feet

Other · Colour · Photo

Two near-identical hummingbirds in flight are tattooed on a pair of feet, one on each foot. The birds have soft, feathered edges and splashes of pink, violet, green and orange that fade out around the wings and body, with fine dark lines defining the beaks and eyes. The colours are bright against the pale skin, and the two designs sit at similar angles, so they read as a matching pair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hummingbirds were nearly dead when Orla carried them in from the cold garden, one cupped in each palm like something spilled. Nobody on Hesper Dome had seen a live bird in eleven years. We kept the feeders filled with sugar water out of habit, the way my grandmother kept a lamp lit for a husband lost on the transit, and every morning the glass stayed empty.

Orla set them on the workbench under the grow-lamps and unscrewed the old tins she had traded for at the Tuesday market. Earth pigments, the real ones: ochre, cobalt, a rose madder nobody was supposed to still own. I wet a brush in the water jar and laid colour on the first bird before its breathing had slowed to nothing. Pink bled out from the shoulder, violet dragged down the flight feathers, green pooled at the throat. I painted the second bird with the same hand and the same angle, so that they would fly the same way or not at all.

They lived. For three days they sat in a box lined with cotton, drinking from a glass pipette while the air recyclers hummed through the walls. On the fourth morning they lifted together and threw their shadows across the whole wall, and Orla laughed, then wept, then asked me whether paint could keep a thing alive or only make it look that way.

I didn't answer. We opened the vent at dusk and they went out into the dark garden without looking back, the colour already fading from their wings as they climbed. Next morning the brush was dry in the jar, and on the wall where they had clung to the frame, a faint pink smear remained, shaped like a wing turned toward the door.
