Two matching fine line lilac sprigs in purple and green with small script beneath, one on each ankle.

Matching lilac sprigs with script on two ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

Two ankles show near-identical small sprigs of purple lilac flowers with green leaves and stems, each with a short line of fine script underneath. The linework is delicate and the flowers are filled with soft purple colour, with green shading on the leaves. The two tattoos sit side by side in the frame against a dark textured background, with white socks on one foot and a pale liner sock on the other.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry was due at six, and Agnes had already counted the lilac heads on the bush outside the chandlery twice before Win came down the steps with her kit bag over one shoulder. The bush had been planted the year the harbour wall was rebuilt, and every May it threw its purple over the wet cobbles until the whole quay smelt of it. Nobody in Porthlennan could remember a spring without it.

"You've got your sock on the wrong way," Win said, crouching to tug at Agnes's ankle. Agnes swatted her hand away. The sprigs had been done in the back room above the net loft, the needle buzzing while the tide turned outside, and the man who inked them had warned that the words underneath would fade first, so they had chosen short ones. Win had written the line on the back of a receipt, and they had argued for an hour about where the comma should go.

Agnes had expected to feel the boat take her friend away, but the gulls were loud and the ramp clanked and Win was already on the deck with one hand on the rail. "Read it out loud," Win called across the widening gap. Agnes couldn't make the words carry over the engine. She tapped her ankle twice instead, the way they used to signal across the harbour when they were nine and wanted to be left alone together.

The boat slid past the breakwater and became a grey mark on the water. Agnes stayed on the quay with the lilac heavy above her, looking down at the small violet heads inked above her sock, identical to the ones on the other ankle that had gone out with the tide. Then she walked home the long way, past the bush, and broke off one sprig and tucked it behind her ear.
