Two wrists side by side, each with a black lettering tattoo of an infinity symbol containing the words est 2008, placed on the inner wrist.

Matching infinity and est 2008 wrist tattoos

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a black infinity symbol tattoo that carries the words est 2008 in a script-style lettering. The left design is oriented the opposite way to the right, so the wording reads upside down from that angle. The linework is solid black with no colour or greyscale shading, and the close crop centres both tattoos on the wrists against a restaurant menu in the background.

Dear Marguerite,

The ferry was late again, so I sat on the harbour wall at Lerwick with a flask of tea and your postcard in my pocket, reading the bit about the mainland shop with the broken sign. You always did have a gift for the things that go wrong and still come out right. I'm writing because Mum asked me to tell you the cottage roof held through the gales, and because I have something to show you that I couldn't put on a postcard.

I had the ink done on the Tuesday, in the back room above the bakery. The man who did it said two lines of script on a wrist need a steady hand and a short memory, so I made him promise not to ask me what the date meant. Infinity, with the words running through the loop like a stitch that won't finish. Est 2008. I know you'll roll your eyes, but you were the one who stood on the pier that summer and said we'd be stuck with each other forever, so I thought I'd make it official.

The lettering turned out a bit odd, mind. Because the wrists sit the way they do, your inked band reads upside down when I look at it from my side of the table, and mine reads the right way round. I thought that was a shame until I realised it's the most honest thing about us. You always see my half the wrong way up and I always see yours the wrong way up, and somehow we still manage to read the same sentence.

Come home at the new year. The kettle's mended and there's a chair by the window with your name on it.

All my love, Isla
