Matching infinity and love wrist tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a matching infinity symbol tattoo. The word love is written in a flowing script inside the loop of the infinity sign, with Roman numerals set below it. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading, and the tattoos are photographed at an angle against a plain background.

The toll-keeper at Carrick Ford had one rule: nobody crossed the river without a mark on their wrist, so he could tell honest travellers from thieves in the dusk. Maud Ellery had no mark. She sat on the wet stones until the lamps were lit on the far bank, watching the ferryman's oar go in and out of the water like a slow clock.

Her brother Tobin had gone over the river to work at the mill at Lesser Hythe, and he had promised to send word by the same boat each Michaelmas. No word came. So she went up to the toll-keeper's wife, who knew ink and needles better than any man in the county, and asked for the mark Tobin had worn as a boy: a loop lying on its side, the sign for a thing that never ends, with the word love curled inside it and a date set beneath in Roman figures, IX.XXII.X, the day their mother had died and the day they had sworn to meet again.
The woman pricked the loop onto Maud's wrist with a bone needle and soot from the forge. It hurt less than the waiting had. In the morning the ferryman looked at the mark, said nothing, and rowed her across himself.
On the far bank a man in a miller's apron stood with his sleeve pushed back. The same loop sat on his arm, the letters gone grey with years. Maud held her wrist up in the lamplight. Neither of them spoke. They laid the two marks side by side, the way the road and the river meet at the ford, and walked home together without once looking back at the water.
