Matching infinity tattoos on ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three feet and ankles are gathered together on a dark textured carpet, with a small infinity symbol on each ankle. The linework is thin and even, and the black ink is solid with no shading. The tattoos are placed at a similar size and position, so they read as a matching set.

On Holm Skerry, where the ferry ran twice a day when the weather allowed, there lived three sisters who had never once been apart. Their mother said they came out of the sea already holding hands, and the island folk called them the Knot.

When the great autumn gale came and tore the ferry's mooring rope from its post, the eldest, Morag, went down the slipway with the loose end in her fists. The middle sister, Ishbel, ran for the spare coil. The youngest, Eilidh, held the lantern up and would not let it go out, though the wind tried hard to take it. Ishbel passed the rope to Morag, and Morag tied it back on itself and round the post, over and under, looping the way their grandmother had taught them on wet evenings: the same loop going over and coming back, with no start and no end. Then she tied the far end round her sister's ankle so it could not slip.

The boat came in through the surf on that line. The men aboard swore afterwards that they felt the rope go taut, slacken, and pull again, steady as a heartbeat, until the keel grated on the stones. Nobody drowned. The sisters came up the shingle bruised and salt-stiff, and the knot stayed on the post for years, too tight for anyone to undo.

Eilidh is an old woman now, and she tells this to any child who asks why the ferry always comes home. If you ask her to show you the knot, she will loop a length of tarred cord around your wrist and tell you it will not come loose until you forget to hold on.
