Matching infinity and heart tattoos on two feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet show matching tattoos of an infinity symbol with a small solid heart on its left loop and the words love you, mom written in cursive script along the right loop. The linework is bold and smooth in black ink, with some soft shading on the heart and lettering. The feet fill the frame, with the tattoos centred on each foot against a warm skin tone.

By the time the 4.12 pulls out of Dunmere, you have already folded the sheet of blue notepaper four times, and the pencil has gone blunt on the last line. Your mother stands on the platform in her church coat, one glove off so she can wave with the bare hand. You told her you would write every Sunday. You did not say you had no idea what to put in a letter to a woman who has never once asked you for a single word.

The first letter from the lodgings in Crewe says the landlady's gravy is grey and the foreman calls everyone son. The second says little more. By the third you have started drawing in the margins, a loop lying on its side, the way Mr Hadley taught you to make a figure eight that never ends, and beside it a small heart pressed so hard the nib spat ink. You don't think about why. You only know the shape comes out the same every time you try to draw something else.

When her reply arrives it is three lines in that looping hand. She has put the stamp on upside down, which means she was in a hurry, which means she sat at the kitchen table the moment your letter came through the door. Under her name she has drawn your loop, going round and back on itself, and written beside it in the careful capitals she keeps for the grocer's bill: LOVE YOU MORE.

You read it standing at the window of the lodging house while the shunting engines work the yard below. Then you take the pencil and, under her line, draw the loop again, and this time you put the heart on the left side, where you can feel your own pulse when you press it to the page.
