Matching mother and daughter heart foot tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet are shown side by side, each with a matching tattoo of an open outlined heart with small stars trailing from its lower edge. The word Mother sits beneath the heart on the left foot and Daughter beneath it on the right, both in a simple black script. The ink is black only, with fine, even linework and light grey tones in the skin around the stars.

The chart had been folded so many times that its creases had gone soft as cloth, and Ada spread it across the kitchen table with the flat of her hand. Outside, the wind worked at the shutters of the lamp house. Wren had already packed her oilskins into the canvas bag by the door, though the ferry was not until Thursday.

Ada had drawn the constellations herself the winter Wren turned seven, dotting them in pencil while the girl sat on the stool beside her and named each one after something absurd: a teapot, a boot, a sleeping dog. The little stars trailed off the edge of the paper in a loose curve, the way they did over the bay when the cloud broke. 'You can't fit a heart on a chart,' Wren had said. 'Yes you can,' Ada said, and drew one.
On the last night they carried the lamp's spare glass down to the rocks and sat with the chart across their knees. Ada gave her the stub of a carpenter's pencil. 'Mark the ones you'll look for from the mainland.' Wren ran her thumb along the faint lines, found the boot, then the teapot, then a star at the very tail of the curve that had no name at all.
'That one's yours,' Ada said. 'I never got round to it.' Wren wrote a word beneath the heart in her cramped capitals, and Ada wrote another beneath her own, and neither of them mentioned that the paper would have to last a long time.
