Matching ornamental symbol tattoos on two fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together at the fingers, and each shows a small matching tattoo of a curling ornamental symbol in black ink. The linework is dark and slightly uneven, with swirls at the top and a looped base. The background is a pale tiled wall with soft natural light, and the close framing puts both tattoos in clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Carrow kept the boarding house at the top of Gullet Lane, and every spring the two Pascoe girls came down from the moor with their pockets full of twine. Their mother had told them that a curl drawn with a thumb in wet sand would hold a boat to its mooring, and the girls believed her the way children believe anything that sounds like a spell.

The swirl was their mark. Ada drew the top loop and Mabel the tail, and they pressed it into the sand at the harbour wall before each crossing so the sea would know whose they were. When the winter gale took the lifeboat's coxswain off the Hanging Rock, it was Mabel who went down alone with the lantern and found his oilskin caught in the weed, its lining stitched with the same curling sign.

Ada never forgave her for going. Mabel came back at dawn with the oilskin and no lantern, and sat on the boarding house step until the tide had washed the mark clean out of the sand. That afternoon Ada took a hatpin from her mother's dresser, dipped it in the grate's soot, and pricked the loop onto the back of Mabel's finger. Mabel pricked the tail onto Ada's, and they swore the sea would have to ask for them both.

The boats came home that spring without a single loss. Nell said it was the girls, and nobody in Gullet Lane ever again saw the two of them walk down to the harbour apart.
