Matching infinity symbol tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest together, with a small black infinity symbol tattooed on the side of one finger and a matching symbol on a finger of the other hand. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The image is in natural colour, with pale skin tones, a pale pink nail polish on one nail and soft white flowers blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the needle from her mother's sewing box and a bottle of ink the lamp-room man let her have for a shilling, and she sat on the back step of Ridley Row waiting for Danny to come up the lane off the early shift. He was late. The hooter had gone at six, and the black dust still lay in the creases of his knuckles when he finally came round the corner, grinning as if he'd won something.

"Put your hand flat," she said. "The little finger, the side of it, where it won't show in chapel." He laughed and did as he was told. She pricked the first loop of the figure eight slowly, the way her gran had taught her to mend stockings, counting breaths between each dot. Each sting felt smaller than the last. Below them the wind moved over the slag heaps and carried the sound of the winding engine up the valley, steady as a pulse.

The roof had come down in the Low Main the week before, and Danny had been under for two hours before they dug him out. He had not said much since. On the bank that morning he had told her he wanted something that couldn't be counted in shifts or wages or coal tubs. Nell had thought about it all night and decided on the sideways eight, a shape with no start and no finish, just going round and back to where it began.

When she finished she wiped the skin with a damp rag and held her own hand beside his on the table. "Now yours," he said, and took up the needle. Her finger did not shake. Outside, the engine stopped, and for once the valley was quiet enough to hear the kettle ticking as it cooled on the range.
