Matching infinity tattoos with sibling script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms are shown close together, each with an infinity symbol tattoo. The first has the words "my sister's protector" written inside its loop and the second has "my brother's keeper" written in the same way. The linework is thin and clean, with the script in a handwritten style, and the image is entirely black and grey against a light background.

The ewes had started lambing the Tuesday before, and Dad's hip meant the top field fell to Owen and me. We set out at four with one torch between us, the snow squeaking under our boots and the sky the colour of a dirty spoon.

Owen went first, as he always did, testing each step with his heel. Keeping me out of the beck was his job, he said, and he'd been doing it since I could walk. When the torch beam slid off the wall I lost my footing and went sideways into the drift. He caught my wrist before I had time to be frightened, and he didn't let go even when his own feet began to slide. We hung there, both laughing in the stupid way you do when you've nearly died, until he hauled me up over the stones.
In the barn we found a single lamb wedged against the trough, its mother nosing it and not yet sure. Owen rubbed it with straw while I held the lantern. He told me I was careless and somebody had to watch my back, and I told him that was rich coming from a boy who once walked into the slurry pit for a bet. We were still bickering when the lamb struggled up on its wobbly legs and the ewe finally started to lick it clean.
Walking back, the frost had furred the kitchen window. Owen drew a loop in it with one finger, then a second loop crossing the first, and the glass beaded where his breath met it. Neither of us said anything. The lantern hissed on the table, and the figure of eight stayed on the glass long after our breath had cleared it.
