Matching jam and peanut butter cartoons on feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Two small cartoon jars with smiling faces, arms and legs sit on the tops of two feet, side by side. The left jar is filled with red and the right with tan, both outlined in thin black and brown linework with simple black facial features. The soft, slightly blurred photograph shows the tattoos in a close crop with green and coral sandals visible around them.

Their names were Bramble and Dunstan, and they were not much good at anything except being together. Bramble could not abide the crust of a loaf. Dunstan would not touch anything too sweet. So every morning, when the cupboard door creaked and a hand reached past them for the bread, they argued about who ought to go first, and every morning the hand took them both and set them down on the same blue plate.
One Tuesday the hand was slow. Rain ran down the window, the kettle had boiled twice, and the cupboard door stuck halfway. Bramble looked at Dunstan, and Dunstan looked at the dark gap above them, and for once neither of them said a word. Then the door gave, the light came pouring in, and the two of them were lifted out together, lid to lid, like old friends carrying a pie between them.
So when you see them on a plate, mind the little space between them. That is where the toast goes.
