Matching cartoon character tattoos with hearts
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two small cartoon figures with smiling faces and stick-like arms and legs sit on separate areas of skin, each with a small red heart nearby. The left figure is brown and the right is pink, with simple outlines and light shading. The two tattoos are placed side by side on what appears to be the inner wrist or forearm, with a plain skin background.

The toaster had been unplugged since Tuesday, and Maurice, a slice of brown toast who had spent his whole life in the bread bin doing nothing heroic, had started to sulk. Edna, the other slice, was staring at the window, where the milk bottles were going pale in the morning light.

Then Mrs Ogden from number nine left a jar of rhubarb jam on the side, and on Thursday the lid came off with a pop that sent a sticky pink ribbon across the worktop. Her knife dragged through the middle of the loaf and out came Pearl, a white slice blushing like a sunset over the bins. "Look at me," she said, "I'm the colour of a bank holiday." Maurice, who had never once been anything but brown, felt something unfamiliar stir in his crust.
Pearl was folded into a lunchbox and carried off to the office, and for three days Maurice and Edna waited in the dark, drying out and sure they had been forgotten. On Monday the bread bin lid lifted. There was Pearl, a little squashed, a little sticky, with a smudge of red across her middle. "I've been thinking," she said, "about how a sandwich needs two halves to be any good at all." Maurice had no answer, so he leaned in close and, for the first time in his life, did not mind being warm.
