In the fishing village of Skerrow the boats went out before the light and came back when the gulls said so. Old Mags Pennick kept the tally on the harbour wall, chalking a mark for every keel that crossed the bar. Two sisters, Ada and Liz Hollin, mended nets on the quay for the Brisk and the Lantern, and they had long since stopped arguing over who had the better knots.

One October the gale came up off the Skerry rocks while the Lantern was still out. Ada sat at the quay end all that night with a needle and a pot of soot. She pricked a small heart into the side of her finger and left it as a plain outline, the way their mother had drawn hearts on the flour sacks. "So you know which hand is mine," she said, and held her finger up to the lamp so Liz could see it. Liz laughed at her, and then did not laugh.

The Lantern came in four days later on the top of a spring tide, her sail in rags and her crew too tired to cheer. Liz had waited on the wall the whole time with a skein of madder-red thread and a pot of the dye her mother used for the fishermen's caps. When the men were ashore she took her sister's hand, pressed the dye into the pricks on her own finger, and worked the heart full until the red held.

That evening Mags came down with her chalk and stood a while looking at the two of them, hands joined over a torn net. She drew one mark on the wall for the Lantern, and then, very slowly, a second beside it, as if the sea had been counting twice.
