Star with mandala pattern on the lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A five-pointed star outlined in solid black sits on the front of a lower leg, close to the ankle. Its interior is filled with a fine, symmetrical mandala-like pattern of lines and small circular motifs. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against a dark background with the leg lit in a warm tone.

Dear Tomas, the lamp at Skerrow Point failed again on Tuesday, so I have spent three nights up the tower with a spanner, a tin of paraffin and Father's brass compass, trying to make the lens turn true. You will laugh, but while I waited for the oil to warm I cut a star from the back of a seed catalogue and pinned it to the lantern glass. Five points, black card, and inside it I pricked a pattern from Mother's old tablecloth, rings of small holes that overlap like a flower opening and closing. It is nothing a keeper is supposed to do. The Board's inspector would have had my stripes off for it.

The trouble is the fog. Nothing on the chart shows Skerrow from the south-west when the bank comes in off the bay, and the Marigold has been feeling her way home with a lead line for a week. Mrs Haddow's boy came up the path yesterday to say his mother had been out in it twice and nearly put the boat on the Anvil. I told him the light was working, which was a lie, so I went back up and made the card star as sharp as I could, and turned the lamp slowly so the pattern swept across the water in rings.

The Marigold came in on Thursday at the turn of the tide. Mrs Haddow said she had seen a star floating on the murk, its points turning, and she steered for the middle of it the way you steer for a hymn you know by heart. I have not told her the star was only card and my bad arithmetic. Come in August, Tomas, and bring the good paraffin. I will show you the pattern up close.
