Matching mandala crescent forearm tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two people's forearms are pressed together, each showing one half of a yin yang style crescent design filled with a central mandala flower. The left arm has crisp black linework with dotted and curved detailing, while the right arm pairs similar black linework with soft green shading in the flower centre. The pale skin and dark background keep the two designs as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp on Carn Dhu has been dark since Tuesday, and the relief boat will not put in before the spring tides, so it falls to you to climb the hundred and twelve iron rungs each dusk and trim the wicks by hand. Across the sound, Gull Skerry shows its own light, the one your sister Morwenna keeps. On clear nights the two beams cross over the water and draw a thin curved line between you, like the edge of a moon sliced in half and pushed apart.

You learned the mandala of the lens from the old keeper, Aldous Penhale, who spent forty winters polishing brass until his fingers went white. He said every lens was a flower if you looked at it long enough: rings of prisms, petals of glass, a centre that caught the eye. Morwenna thought that was nonsense. She painted hers green, a colour she claimed the sea never managed, and sent you a card with a sketch of the two beams meeting like the halves of a bowl.

The storm came in on the ninth night. Your lamp failed at the worst moment, the wick smoking black, and you stood on the gallery with the rain going sideways, trying to remember what Aldous had taught you. Out past the reef, a trawler's lights were wandering. Then, faint and steady, Gull Skerry's beam swung round and held its course, and the trawler turned toward it. You understood then that she had been watching your dark window as closely as you had been watching hers.

When the sky cleared you climbed up and found the wick cold but the glass unbroken. You relit it with a match from the tin in your coat, and in the grey light before dawn the two beams met over the water in their thin bright crescent, one clear, one faintly green. You raised a hand toward the other rock as if she could see it. She could. Her lamp dipped twice, the way it always did when she was pleased with you.
