Matching yin yang mandala forearm tattoos

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show near-identical tattoos of a yin yang shape, with a rounded section filled by a mandala-style flower and a tapering crescent edge. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with fine detail in the petals and inner patterns. The ink is mostly black and grey, with a slightly greenish tone on the right arm, and the photo is taken at close range against a dark background.

The lift in Kestrel House had been broken since the spring, so Maud climbed the eleven floors every evening with a shopping bag in each hand and counted the landings out loud to keep herself honest. On the seventh floor lived a girl called Ines who painted her nails the colour of pond water and who had once, in the winter, lent Maud a torch when the stairwell bulbs gave out.

One night the two of them sat on the cold concrete step between the seventh and eighth floors, because Ines said the view of the car park was better from there, and it was not. They had a tin of shortbread between them. Ines said the building was a half moon with its back turned, and that the people in it were only ever half awake to each other. Maud said that was the sort of thing people said when they had been up too late. They argued about it until the tin was empty.

The next week Ines came up to the eleventh floor with a tiny bottle of black ink and a needle in a pencil case, and they sat on the roof with the wind pulling at their sleeves. Ines drew a circle on Maud's forearm with a biro first, then a curve through it, one side heavy and one side light, the way a moon goes thin before it turns. She filled the round side with a flower, and then Maud did the same for her, and neither of them ever said who had started it.

When the lift was finally fixed, Maud rode it down alone, holding her arm against her chest. Two floors below, a door opened, and Ines stepped in with a green ink smudge on her wrist, grinning as if she had planned the whole thing.
