Matching tribal sun and moon on wrists

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown with a pair of black tribal tattoos, a sun with radiating flame-like rays on the left wrist and a crescent moon with swirling ornamental detail on the right. The bold solid linework and patterned infill are rendered in black ink only, with the pieces sitting side by side against a dark leather background. The photograph is black and white, which keeps the focus on the contrast and shape of the two designs.

The last up train through Carrow Junction always came in with its lamps lit even in July, and Nan Pethick would stand on the platform with a lantern she didn't need, counting carriages under her breath. My brother Lew thought the lantern was for show. It wasn't. She said a light on the platform told the driver someone was still awake to be sorry for him.

We split the day between us. Lew took the early turn, from the first milk train until the sun cleared the water tower, and I had the dark: the mail sacks, the signal wires humming in the cold, the kettle that never boiled quite fast enough. We swapped the lamp-book at every changeover, pencilled in our two hands, so each of us knew what the other had seen. Nobody else in Carrow bothered to log a fog bank or a stray heifer on the line.

The night the points froze at Hobb's cutting, Lew's entry said only: sun up by six, moon still out over the quarry, track clear. I read it twice in the cold hut before I understood he had left the page open for me to find. We met at the foot of the signal box steps that morning, the thin moon fading over the hills while the sun came up sharp behind the tower, and neither of us said who had kept which half of the day.
