Two matching tattoos sit side by side on the inner forearms of two people. The linework is thin and even, in black ink only, and the two pieces are framed closely against plain skin.

Mam used to say you could tell the Dawson girls apart by their voices, not their faces. Nell shouted and Jean hummed. Their father had gone out for the lobster pots with Tommy Rowe at dusk, against the glass. By four the coastguard said the boat was taking water somewhere past the Inner Farne. Nell wanted to take the skiff out. Jean said the sea had already had one Dawson and she wasn't handing it another. They shouted at each other across the quay with the spray coming over the harbour wall, and neither of them moved.

In the end it was Jean who tied the bowline, the same knot their father had taught them on the painter, a small loop with the rope running down through it like a question. She threw the free end to a man in an orange jacket and said, go on then, bring them back. Nell stood on the wet stone with her arms folded, the wind turning her sleeves inside out, and she didn't say a word.

The Marion came in at seven on the tide, low in the water, Tommy bailing with a bucket and their father sitting on the thwart with his hands in his lap as if he were waiting for a bus. Nell reached the steps before the rope was fast. Jean followed slower, humming, and when they stood together on the slipway Nell took her sister's hand and said, sisters, and it sounded less like a word than a knot pulled tight.
