Fine line black ink tattoos of a crescent moon and a sun, each with an arrow running through it, on the top of two bare feet.

Matching moon and sun arrow tattoos on feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet show a matching pair of small tattoos. The left foot has a crescent moon with short radiating rays and a diagonal arrow, while the right has a circle with sunburst rays and a vertical arrow. The thin single-needle linework is in black ink with no shading, set against a pale textured wall.

Dear Ivy,

The Palais shut its doors at two this morning and I walked the length of the pier in my stockinged feet because my shoes were full of confetti and I didn't have the heart to shake them out. Mr Haddow has finally agreed to let the band play the Thursday waltzes in daylight, which he calls an experiment and I call a miracle. You would have laughed at the bandleader's face when the sun came up over the bay and the tinsel on the balcony caught it.

Harold, the doorman, asked after you again. He thinks you ran off with a sailor. I told him you ran off with the sun, which he didn't understand, and I didn't explain, because you know what I mean. Every night I dance until the moon is over the lighthouse, and every morning you set off the other way with the light at your back. Between us we have never once been in the same room when the weather was right.

Still, I think of the little arrow the inkman put on us at the fairground, yours pointing over the fields and mine pointing at the sky. Mother says we were foolish to spend a week's wages on it, but I'd have it done again tomorrow.

Come home at Michaelmas. Bring the fiddle. The bay will be dark by eight and I will be waiting on the top step with the lamp lit and my shoes off.

Love, Marjorie
