Every evening the lamplighter of Cinder Row walked the length of the town with a pole on his shoulder, and every evening his daughter walked two steps behind him, counting the lamps aloud until he told her to hush. The town had three hundred and nine of them, and the old people said there had once been more, before the river flood took the lower quay and the lamps that stood on it.

The night the fog came in off the estuary, the lamplighter's wife did not come home from the mill. The daughter counted the lamps twice, then a third time, and when she reached the iron gate at the top of the hill she stopped, because the lamps had gone out one after another behind her like a row of closing eyes.

Her father had taught her a rhyme for the stars, which the town had forgotten how to see through its smoke. She said it now, softly, and in the dark gap where the lamps had been, a line of small stars came out and curled into the shape of an open heart. They pointed her down the hill toward the mill yard, where her mother stood under the last working lamp with her shawl over her head and one hand raised, waiting to be found.

Her mother took one look at the stars and laughed, and said the girl had found her the way she always found things, by counting. They walked home together under the heart, and when the fog lifted the lamplighter's daughter could no longer tell which of the stars had been there all along and which ones she had lit herself.
